Rooted Together

A film for the BC Community Forest Association about community forestry, a different model for managing BC's forests, told through five community forests across the province.

Community forests are a different way of doing forestry in British Columbia, and they answer many of the problems with the province's dominant system. The BC Community Forest Association had little media telling that story, at a time when people across BC were asking where forest policy should go next.

Salmonberry Studios travelled to five community forests across the province: Sunshine Coast, Logan Lake, Chinook, West Boundary and Creston. Each was working through different issues, from watersheds and biodiversity to local jobs, recreation and partnerships with First Nations. The project produced a short film for each community forest and a longer film for the association on community forestry as a whole, which also includes scenes from Cowichan Community Forest on Vancouver Island.

The association and the community forest managers have used the films with residents, government, industry, partners and First Nations. Since their release, new community forest agreements have been signed in BC, which had not happened in some time.

What it did

Five individual community forest films delivered alongside the main association film. Used by the BC Community Forest Association and participating managers to communicate with residents, government, industry, partners and First Nations. New community forest agreements have been signed in BC since release. The studio has since worked with Revelstoke Community Forest and Burns Lake Community Forest.
