European Green Crab

A short documentary on the European green crab invasion of BC's coast, and the work by Coastal Restoration Society, three First Nations and Fisheries and Oceans Canada to fight it.

The European green crab is an invasive species spreading along BC's coast, and most people have never heard of it. This film follows the people trying to stop it.

It was shot mainly in Clayoquot Sound, in the territories of the Tla-o-qui-aht and Ahousaht First Nations, and in Sooke Basin on southern Vancouver Island, in T'Sou-ke territory. Biologists with Coastal Restoration Society, scientists with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, and leadership from all three nations explain what the crab is doing to the coast and what they are doing about it.

The film is told as a story unfolding, closer to journalism than an explainer about an environmental project. That approach is why it travelled. It has more than 21,000 views on YouTube, most of them from people who simply wanted to know what the green crab is doing in BC, which is a lot of reach for a project led by a local nonprofit.
